Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3

I've got a 'game' buzz today, one like I haven't had for a long time. I know Infinity Ward have lost many of their most experienced staff and I'm not expecting anything really progressive from what Activision has patched together out of a once-great studio. But, there's no denying I've been a fan of what Infinity Ward released in its previous incarnation.

Hand up, I was never a fan of Treyarch and the sideways/backwards steps they made with the Call of Duty franchise, and I last played Modern Warfare Black Ops about 2 hours after I'd queued outside my midnight-opening Blockbuster store to buy the game. I still see the new map packs getting charged to my card so someone is still playing it - but it's not me. The question remains, can Infinity Ward, or what's left of it, pull the rabbit from the hat and produce some more Modern Warfare magic?

Sure, we've only seen some cut-scenes and no gameplay, but it just looks better than anything Treyarch put out and release day can't come soon enough. The soldier's movement is smoother, the attention to detail already blows Treyarch out of the water, and let's hope Activision have dedicated the resources to the game, rather than just trying to milk the brand for cash like they have done with the Guitar Hero stuff.

I'm under no illusions that I'm a soldier, nor do I wish to be (hats off to those that are), but the Modern Warfare experience swept me into the xBox and into my TV and I was part of the story.

It's all multi-player for me, although I do play the campaigns when my internet speeds are crabby. Modern Warfare 2 didn't have the story of the first game, but I still had a wry smile on my face when prisoner 627 turned out to be good old Captain Price "this belongs to you sir" in Modern Warfare 2. Does anyone really buy it for the campaigns? I guess the attraction lies in the millions of hours we sit in front of our TV blasting strangers from across the planet. Sure the tactical insertions and boosters left us thinking the Modern Warfare games were far from perfect, but does anything else really get close?

Roll on the 8th November.
